My earliest memory of Earth Day is watching Captain Planet marathons from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Cartoon Network. As a kid, that was pretty much all I could do, but I think I also learnt a lot from that show; it was a big reason for my interest in environmental activism. However, now, as an adult, we can all do more than just watch the news – we can, in our daily lives affect change for the better. Starting with the choices we make, especially with food.
This year’s Earth Day theme is Climate Change. Every year, I work towards cutting out a few ‘conveniences’ that make life easier at the cost of the planet. In 2017, I transitioned to a plant-based diet. In 2018, I made these 20 Earth-friendly changes in the home to help reduce the waste I generate out of my household. In 2019, I began home-composting all the food waste coming out of my plant-based kitchen. I’m still getting my goals in place for 2020, but one of the major areas I’m looking to improve is in what I put inside my body.
We usually stock up on a lot of processed food at home – it seems the transition from our 20s to the 30s is still quite not complete! To be fair, impromptu entertaining is a lot easier with ready-made foods. Like, when a neighbor stops by for a quick chat, you invite her in for tea and maybe set out a plate of cookies too. It’s what we do. Or in the summers, when a cold beverage is not optional, we keep our fridge stocked with something to drink besides cold water.
But eventually, we realized that it was neither good for our bodies, nor for the planet.
So we’ve now switched to making our own homemade drinks using Torani Puremade Syrups, which are made with all-natural ingredients – no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. And bonus, its ingredients are also GMO free.
And it’s versatile, not just in drinks and beverages – we use it to soak cakes and sponges, drizzle over breakfast muffins, as makeshift pancake syrup in a pinch, and even to flavor cookies! You don’t even need much – just a spoonful would do most times.
This Raspberry Iced Tea has been a permanent fixture in my fridge for the past few weeks, simply because the deliciousness to easiness ratio is so high! You start with a black tea you love – and for me, it’s the Numi Organic Tea – Breakfast blend. It’s really strong – one bag is all you need for a good cup of chai.
Steep the Numi tea in hot water for 5 minutes. Flavor with Torani Puremade Raspberry Syrup. Add ice. Mint. DONE!
I keep a gallon jug of the tea in the fridge for us to sip through the week – to serve, I grab a glass, fill with ice, top with the tea and enjoy!
No more pre-packaged drinks in the fridge with tons of preservatives and additives, nor the endless bottles and cans you have to send to the landfills. The Earth is happy, and so is your body.

Raspberry Iced Tea
You’ll want this all-natural two ingredient Raspberry Iced Tea in your arsenal as the days get warmer and for when surprise guests come your way!
Ingredients
- 3 bags of Numi Organic Tea - Breakfast Blend
- 6 c hot water
- 1/3 c + 2 tbsp Torani Puremade Raspberry Syrup
- 2-3 sprigs of fresh mint (optional)
- Ice
Instructions
- Add Numi tea bags to a pitcher and pour over the hot water. Let steep for about 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags.
- Sweeten the tea with the Torani Puremade Raspberry Syrup to taste. I make it a little sweeter than I actually like to drink, to make up for the dilution with ice.
- Add the sprigs of mint and let steep in the warm tea for about 5-10 minutes. Remove and discard the mint after that. If you're not a fan of mint, you can skip it, or just add a sprig to your serving glass for aroma.
- TO SERVE: Fill a serving glass with ice, pour over the Raspberry tea and enjoy!
- STORE: The tea can be refrigerated for upto a week.
