Coffee Granita! Just the name gives you respite from the summer heat. Why should we give up on coffee just because Summer’s here?
I saw this on a food channel and I knew that I must try it at once.
It’s absolutely simple and brilliant. It tastes like coffee flavored shaved ice. Perfect summer solution for coffee lovers.
Coffee Granita
– You first make coffee (not the Indian degree kaapi, just a diluted version of the decoction), and add as much sweetening as you like (sugar, sugar-substitute, brown sugar, honey, what have you…)
-Pour this mixture into a metal pan (The chef asked that the pan be cold before you begin this step. So I popped mine into the freezer for a while)
– Put in the freezer and every now and then, take it out, and scrape it with a fork to mix the liquid and frozen bits well. After the third or fourth time, it’ll begin to look a little sludgy. I got it to the below sand-like stage only after it sat in the freezer overnight. Blame the Chennai heat and the kilos of frozen peas hogging the freezer.
– Once it becomes firm, and devoid of all traces of liquid, give it one last final scrape. And serve with cream and maybe a little dusting of cocoa powder for that mocha-effect!
